10 Things to Do When You’ve Received a Tax Lien Letter

  1. Open the Letter – Funny as that sounds, many people put it away in a drawer.
  2. Stay Calm – There are all kinds of solutions to this problem.
  3. Look at the form number in the upper right-hand corner of the letter and date of the letter and make a note and see if it is from the Internal Revenue Service or State (New York, New York City, New Jersey Tax Department)
  4. DO NOT CALL THE TAX AUTHORITY DIRECTLY. IT CAN LEAD TO BAD RESULTS! We will call them in my office.

  6. If you are behind on your tax return filings, then get a folder together and put the various W-2, 1099 tax documents together for each non-filed year.
  7. Remember to bring the letter, and other documents (non-filed returns, W-2 and proof of income or self-employment income with you to the appointment.
