10 Things to Do When You’ve Received a Tax Lien Letter
- Open the Letter – Funny as that sounds, many people put it away in a drawer.
- Stay Calm – There are all kinds of solutions to this problem.
- Look at the form number in the upper right-hand corner of the letter and date of the letter and make a note and see if it is from the Internal Revenue Service or State (New York, New York City, New Jersey Tax Department)
- DO NOT CALL THE TAX AUTHORITY DIRECTLY. IT CAN LEAD TO BAD RESULTS! We will call them in my office.

- If you are behind on your tax return filings, then get a folder together and put the various W-2, 1099 tax documents together for each non-filed year.
- Remember to bring the letter, and other documents (non-filed returns, W-2 and proof of income or self-employment income with you to the appointment.
